The Business Singularity: Running $1B With 20 People
What happens when AI removes the traditional constraints on organizational scaling? The Business Singularity is the point where revenue can grow 10-50x without proportional headcount growth.

The Business Singularity is the point where a company’s revenue can scale 10-50x without proportional headcount growth. We’re not there yet, but we’re closer than most CEOs realize.
The Core Idea
Traditional organizations scale linearly: more revenue requires more people. Double the revenue, roughly double the headcount. This has been true for centuries because human cognitive capacity is the binding constraint.
AI changes that equation.
When AI handles 80% of customer support, processes bug fixes autonomously, writes and reviews code, generates board decks, and manages data entry, the relationship between headcount and revenue output fundamentally shifts.
What We’re Seeing at Trilogy
In three years, we’ve achieved 4x revenue per headcount. Not by working people harder, but by augmenting every role with AI. Our $110M portfolio runs with roughly 40 people.
The key insight: departments are a constructed fallacy. Sales, Marketing, Engineering, Support - these divisions exist because individual humans can only be expert in one domain. AI doesn’t have that limitation. A single person augmented with AI can operate across multiple traditional “departments.”
Horizontal Product Owners
Instead of departmental silos, we’re moving toward horizontal Product Owners. These are people who own a product or business outcome end-to-end, using AI to execute across the full stack - from code to customer communication to financial modeling.
This isn’t theory. We have team members who handle support, write product specs, review code, and manage customer relationships - all enhanced by AI tools and Second Brains.
The Path Forward
The Business Singularity won’t happen overnight. But the companies that start restructuring now - removing departmental silos, building AI into every workflow, training every employee to be an AI-augmented operator - will have an insurmountable advantage in 3-5 years.
The question isn’t whether this will happen. It’s whether your company will be leading it or responding to it.
